Volume 5, Issue 5.3 brings together the papers of the Animal Sciences and Veterinary Medicine sections of the Academy of Agricultural and Forestry Sciences "Gheorghe Ionescu-Sisesti", presented at the Academy's anniversary session of 25 May 2023.

Animal breeding and production are covered across species: genetic variability in the indigenous Bazna and Red Mangalitsa pig breeds, reproductive performance and milk production in dairy buffaloes of central Romania, lactation curves in Montbeliarde cows, the suitability of the Transylvanian Pinzgau breed for meat production, weaning stress and calf behaviour in Romanian Spotted cattle, artificial insemination with fresh and frozen semen in ewes, the fattening aptitudes of Tsigai crossbreds with French meat rams, and progress towards a new high performance meat sheep breed at Palas. Veterinary medicine contributions address the prevalence of digestive parasites in smallholder pigs in the Hartibaciu Valley, the efficacy of a propolis-based product against rabbit coccidiosis, the influence of plant extracts on the immunological profile of broiler chickens, and systemic immunological changes in cattle tested for tuberculosis. Two papers on sericulture cover the nutritive value of mulberry leaf for Bombyx mori L. and the role of laboratory diagnosis in controlling silkworm diseases, and a further study applies a risk-based One Health approach to the management of dairy farms.

Papers are published in English, with abstracts in English and Romanian.
